I have to give Nike mad props for this new advertisement that combines Marvin Gaye singing the national anthem at the NBA All-Star game in 1983 with images of the USA current men's Olympic basketball team. Brilliant!
To those who would say that I am a johnny come lately or jumping on the back wagon regarding the Boston Celtics, I would have you look at three blog posts I made over the past two years.
July 3, 2007 - a tribute to one of my favorite NBA players Ray Allen when he joined the Celtics
July 31, 2007 - recognition of the greatness of acquiring Kevin Garnett by the Boston Celtics.
August 2, 2007 - portending the greatness of the future of the Boston Celtics.
As I stated before in this blog, I grew up loving Doctor Julius Erving and the Philadelphia 76ers. I HATED the 1980s version of the Celtics. Nonetheless during the time I lived in Boston from 1999 - 2006, the Celtics were pretty horrible and Boston sports fans paid much more attention to the Red Sox, Patriots, and Bruins. However given my love for the game of basketball, I began following the Celtics quite ardently, studied their history, watched a great number of games on television (even stomaching Tom Heinsohn's commentary), went to several games and began rooting for the team to do well, especially when they made Doc Rivers head coach.
Tonight I salute the Boston Celtics for their victory against the Lakers and I am so happy for Doc Rivers, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and the BIG TICKET himself, Kevin Garnett. CHAMPIONS!!!
GO C's!!!
The NBA playoffs are in the first round and I have yet to really start following. I am pulling for the Boston Celtics to do it all. I am sooooo loving the NBA playoff advertising concept "There Can Only Be One". The one featuring LeBron James and Kevin Garnett is below.
Dude I wanted to give you a chance, but notwithstanding the whole sexual harassment case, the pathetic performance of the Knicks under your leadership is reason enough to bid a fond farewell to your time as Knicks head coach.
Given your success at Indiana University and with the Detroit Pistons, it would seem you would have had more success in the NBA front office. However I would suggest you follow your boy Magic Johnson and focus on business ventures away from basketball.
I've become less and less of a sports fan as I've grown older. I was a huge Dallas Cowboys fan back in the days of Roger Staubach, Tony Dorsett, and Tom Landry. I remember crying like a baby when Dallas lost to the San Francisco 49'ers on Dwight Clark's "THE catch" in 1982. My mother laughed at me and told me "Son ... it's only a game". I pretty much gave up on watching the NFL and caring about it on that day.
I will always love basketball and especially the NBA. However the recent scandal involving NBA referee, Tim Donaghy and the way NBA Commissioner, David Stern handles NBA affairs has made me cynical.
I was a HUGE Hank Aaron and Atlanta Braves fan as a kid and have maintained a love for the two all of my life. I will not allow Barry Bonds chase of Aaron and the steriods controversy to effect my love for baseball.
However the recent events surrounding Michael Vick are appalling and have turned me sour to sports in general.
I'll still follow tennis and look forward to the upcoming U.S. Open. Nonetheless I've got a life to live and to be concerned with sports is no longer a valid means of escape, it's a distraction from what really matters in life.
I
I'll have more comments on the recent NBA draft soon but after scouring the Internet for information about the draft itself I was prompted to blog about this rather amusing photo of a certain young man from a certain college basketball team in the southern United States.
Dude, I loved your father as a tennis player and admired the flair in brought to the game of tennis. I think you were an excellent college player and I wish you well with the Chicago Bulls in the NBA but a litle advice ... get a haircut and find a stylist. You look like a clown next to David Stern in this photo.
I was hoping that the Cavaliers would do a bit more to support Bron Bron in his quest for his first NBA championship but alas the San Antonio Spurs are doing what they always do ... playing solid and fundamental basketball. I'll go ahead and say congratulations to the Spurs on their fourth championship. Even if the Cavs win tonight in Cleveland ... it's over ... Boring? Yes but hats off to the Spurs for consistency.
When Lebron James was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated as a high school junior touted as the next big thing in basketball or "The Chosen One", I was a bit skeptical about what kind of impact he would have when entering the NBA. I now sit in total awe as this young man is taking his Cleveland Cavaliers right at the Detroit Pistons and making them look silly. I don't know if Lebron and gang will close out the Pistons in the Eastern Conference finals but Lebron is definitely destined for a ring or two in the coming years. It's great to see this kid rise and live up to if not beyond the hype. Go Lebron get busy!!!
