I knew you were the wrong person for the job when you were nominated and confirmed by the Senate. I called for your resignation long ago. It's not only a travesty that you lied so often and so badly but your main problem may be your total and sad loyalty to a man whose ethical and moral stature is more of a joke than your own.
I was in a bit of a haze this morning while listening to NPR on KUNM but heard some talk about "commuting", "Scooter", "Bush" ... then I headed to the Flying Star on my morning walk and saw the headlines in the papers. George W. Bush has gone too far. I am scouring the Internet now for the outrage. However what is sad is that probably nothing will come of this and the Bush administration continues to go unscathed and it's malfeasance continues. What? ... are we going to have to wait 30 years for all of the information to come out about how Bush/Cheney/Rove et al screwed this country and profited for themselves? I could have told you that back in 2000 when the bumbling idiot got "elected".
As much fun as I am having watching the "chickens come home to roost" aspect of the decline and exposure of the current Bush administration for what it is, I am still left with the sad thought that George W. Bush and most importantly Dick Cheney will exit this administration basically unscathed by the malfeseance and wrongdoing of the past seven odd years. What's even more disturbing is that Cheney himself has profited the most in power and money due to the war in Iraq.
In any event I was very interested and provoked by a recent broadcast of an interview on NPR with Leon Wieseltier, literary editor of the magazine The New Republic. Wieseltier is no one's Republican and certainly not a conservative yet he is a good friend of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby who justly or unjustly just took a major dive for the Bush administration after being sentenced to two and a half years in prison and a $250,000 fine for conviction on four of five counts of perjury, false statements, and obstructing justice. One need only listen to the interview with Libby's "friend", Wieseltier here to begin wondering about who is zooming who in Washington these days.
I used to subscribe to and read the pages of The New Republic during my college days and often now visit them online. Wieseltier has done an outstanding job as literary editor there. I was happily surprised to find Wieseltier making a "guest peformance" on one of my favorite Sopranos episodes from Season 5, "All Happy Families...". Wieseltier plays Stewart Silverman who has the rather unforturnate luck to have his Mercedes Benz SL stolen at a Jewish wedding during a mob car theft. It's a funny episode. For more on that read here.
When I first read about this yesterday and saw two of the 20 "historic" cover photos one of which has a rather curious photo of Condoleeza Rice and George Bush together, I was a little perplexed as to how I felt about the idea of an issue devoted to Africa guest edited by U2 frontman Bono. I did a little cyber sleuthing and went to the Vanity Fair web site. I will wait to see the actual issue when it hits newsstands but after viewing the 20 "historic" covers photographed by the famous photographer Annie Lebowitz on the Vanity Fair web site, I'm still wondering how I really feel. I guess I should list some of the people Lebowitz shot for the 20 "historic" covers and maybe you will understand what I mean. (George W. Bush, Condoleeza Rice, Alicia Keyes, Don Cheadle, Jay-Z, Chris Rock, Maya Angelou, Djiman Hansou, et al) You can also view the cover "slideshow" on the Vanity Fair web site
Here is Vanity Fair's explanation of why they included George W. Bush for the Africa issue:
I've come out previously on this blog in support of Bill Richardson's candidacy for President of the United States. I continue to be bolstered by my choice after living in New Mexico for nine months now and learning about the things Richardson has done for this state and also listening to New Mexico locals/natives discuss their views of this man. On paper Richardson is more qualified than Hillary or Obama, the media/money darlings of the moment. Nonetheless Richardson still faces an uphill battle for name recognition and fund raising. It's time to seriously start paying attention folks to what type of presidency we want the United States to have in the post George W. Bush years. There will be a great deal of work to be done and I still think Richardson is the man.
The news yesterday was about Hillary Clinton obatining a political endorsement from Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa of Los Angeles. This is obviously an important endorsement as Villaraigos is one of the most well connected Democrats in California and among the most influential Latinos in the nation. It will be interesting to see how this will effect the Richardson campaign among Latino voters in Los Angeles. The New York Times reported yesterday ... “Governor Richardson is more interested in getting the support of Latino voters rather than big-name Latino leaders,” said the spokesman Pahl Shipley. “He has never felt that high-profile endorsements help much in a campaign.”.
I invite you to view video clips of Bill Richardson discussing his energy plan and views on the war in Iraq from the organization Democracy For America. The link is here.
Stay abreast of current events, get your news from a variety of sources, pay attention to the specifics of the upcoming political primaries, register to vote, and let's begin to repair the damage that has been done for the past 8 years in our country.
I direct you to "Google" or search the word sustainability. There is an obvious paradigm shift taking place in the global/social/cultural/political zeitgeist. It will be interesting to see where this shift will lead the world but I must say that it is very good to see people talking more about the environment and the human condition. Perhaps the past eight years under George W. Bush, the tragic events of 9/11, and the war in Iraq among other things have sparked a revolution of sorts. Count on "The Mind of Estevanico" to keep his eyes and ears open as well as his mind and soul to what is going on in this world.
Sustainability will be a key topic of this blog over the coming weeks and months.
Alberto Gonzales should have never been hired in the first place. That was obvious. As much fun as it is to watch the Bush administration crumble in it's last two years, it's a painful reminder of how much George W. Bush and Dick Cheney have done to destroy this country and our standing in the world while increasing their own bank accounts and power of themselves and their friends. Please Attorney Gonzales stop trying to save yourself and do the right thing and leave. You can take the entire adminstration with you while you are it.
Most of you know my politics lean toward the left and progressiveness. I am so looking forward to the day when the current Bush adminstration is forced to cut and run out of Washington, D.C. What is so paradoxical about the George W. Bush administrations is that he can claim to have had two African-American secretaries of state. I have a great deal of respect for Colin Powell and it's good to see him recently express his regrets about the war in Iraq and his disagreement with much of the Bush foreign policy. On the other hand there is my good friend Condoleeza. This woman continually amazes me with her staunch support of the president and his idiotic policies. I've previously touched on the jab Spike Lee issued to Condoleeza in his brilliant Katrina documentary and I've mentioned Gloria Steinem's challenge concerning Condoleeza. Now my sentiments are futher corroborated by an upcoming (November) book from Verso Books {props to my buddy Marty Gosser for sending me the most recent Verso catalog}. The book is entitled Dr. Rice in the House. I will be reading this one for sure ... Good work Verso ... there are many other titles in your fall catalog that I plan to read as well.
