I feel as if I am on the cusp of something big ... El Paso, TX ...
Life is good. Trying to become acquainted with work. Learning a great deal about education in the southwest. Learning about myself and my country. History has become focal ...
Patrick Deval's candicacy in Massachusetts interest me. So do Mitt Romney's presidential ambitions. Deval's candicacy intrigues me more so however ... woke up this morning and tuned the Internet into WBUR in Boston and listened to Early Editon ... good local coverage of the recent debate amongst the candidates for governor of Massachusetts ... haven't followed it too closely myself, it was good to hear my former first Boston (er Somerville) roommate Fred Thys doing commentary in his role of poitical analyst for NPR.
PATRICK DEVAL FOR GOVERNOR OF MASSACHUSETTS.
I bought my first digital camera several years ago and it has served me well and will continue to do so in the future especially when I need high quality digital photographs beyond the realm of simple point and shoot. It is the Canon PowerShot G2. It was Canon's first 4.0 megapixel camera and is no longer being made by the company. It is basically what the industry calls a "prosumer compact digital camera" which is to say that the G2 is an electronic product that straddles both the professional and consumer markets. However despite its sound digital photo output it is not quite compact enough to serve when I have simple point and shoot needs and when portability is the key issue. The G2 is a 4.0 megapixel camera and I used it quite a bit when living in Boston to capture winter photos. Some examples of which are here:
Today I received in the mail my new Canon PowerShot SD600 (Elph series) which is indeed actually compact and what's more it's 6.0 megapixels compared to the 4.0 of my G2. The SD600 is so small I almost missed it when opening the box. I can't wait to get on the road and use it. I did quite a bit of research and shopping around before purchasing this camera. It's gotten great reviews in most of the places I go for opinions such as Amazon.com and CNET. In the future you will see digital photos taken from both of my cameras and I will label those photos as G2 or SD600 depending on which camera I happen to use. These days everyone seems to have a digital camera. Now I have two. Here's to forthcoming great photos from my travels in New Mexico.

I do not like starting my day by reading news like this but this was the first thing that caught my eye when hitting the NYT web site tihs morning. Hopefully the world will begin to take care of Africa sooner or later.
While in El Paso, Texas last week, I stopped by Cinco Puntos Press on Texas Avenue and picked up Ringside Seat to a Revolution as well as a book that appears to be out of print entitled Tierra - Contemporary Short Fiction of New Mexico edited by Rudolfo A. Anaya. I am going to be reading both of these books over the next few weeks when time away from work permits.
I am very interested in learning as much as I can about the history and culture of this wonderous land I now inhabit. As a bookseller, I've long been familiar with the literary work of Rudolfo A. Anaya but have yet to read his work. I'll get to his famous novel, Bless Me Ultima eventually. I'll begin with this edited short story collection, Tierra that also includes other writers such as Simon J. Ortiz, Tony Hillerman, Sabine R. Ulibarri, and Drum Hadley among many others. Tierra was published in 1989. I look forward to reading these short stories and I'll report back on what I've read soon. With regard to the other book I purchased at Cinco Puntos, Ringside Seat to a Revolution will have to be digested over a longer period of time. I do look forward to commenting on it as well after a few months and more travel to El Paso.
Most of you know my politics lean toward the left and progressiveness. I am so looking forward to the day when the current Bush adminstration is forced to cut and run out of Washington, D.C. What is so paradoxical about the George W. Bush administrations is that he can claim to have had two African-American secretaries of state. I have a great deal of respect for Colin Powell and it's good to see him recently express his regrets about the war in Iraq and his disagreement with much of the Bush foreign policy. On the other hand there is my good friend Condoleeza. This woman continually amazes me with her staunch support of the president and his idiotic policies. I've previously touched on the jab Spike Lee issued to Condoleeza in his brilliant Katrina documentary and I've mentioned Gloria Steinem's challenge concerning Condoleeza. Now my sentiments are futher corroborated by an upcoming (November) book from Verso Books {props to my buddy Marty Gosser for sending me the most recent Verso catalog}. The book is entitled Dr. Rice in the House. I will be reading this one for sure ... Good work Verso ... there are many other titles in your fall catalog that I plan to read as well.
